Switzerland is likely to hold a referendum on the possible construction of new nuclear power plants. The National Council on Thursday approved a government bill that seeks to lift the ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants in force since 2018. The initiative had already been approved by the other chamber of parliament, the Council of Cantons. However, the citizens will likely have the final say.
In a referendum in May 2017, the Swiss spoke out for the nuclear phase-out and stronger promotion of renewable energies. The construction of new nuclear power plants has been banned since then.
