‘National rescue mission’ to save butterflies
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 18 – Last year’s Big Butterfly Count recorded the lowest numbers ever with an average of seven butterflies per 15-minute count, prompting urgent calls for conservation action in the UK.
- Starting July 18, Charity Butterfly Conservation called on the public to participate in the Big Butterfly Count until August 10, to help monitor butterfly populations.
- Facing long-term declines, the charity declared a `Butterfly Emergency` after last summer’s lowest counts, with over 80% of butterfly species declining since the 1970s.
- Participants download the Big Butterfly Count app or visit www.bigbutterflycount.org, then between July 18 and August 10 spend 15 minutes outdoors counting and logging butterflies and moths.
- Survey outcomes map butterfly populations and guide new conservation efforts, enabling Butterfly Conservation to target struggling species.
- Organisers say each count builds broader conservation efforts, and Dr Richard Fox said `This is a chance to turn curiosity into conservation`.
