NASCAR driver Kyle Busch died of severe pneumonia, family says
His family said the infection caused rapid, overwhelming complications after he passed out in a simulator and was hospitalized.
On Thursday, two-time NASCAR champion Kyle Busch died at 41 after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, his family confirmed on Saturday.
Busch collapsed while testing in a Chevrolet simulator in Concord on Wednesday, following reports he had been struggling with a sinus cold since racing in New York earlier this month.
According to audio from the Cabarrus County Sheriff, an emergency caller reported Busch was "coughing up blood" and lying on a bathroom floor, while the family received the final medical evaluation Saturday.
Richard Childress Racing announced it is suspending his car number until his 11-year-old son, Brexton, is ready to drive, while competitors will race with commemorative black decals.
A future Hall of Famer with 234 career wins, Busch leaves behind his wife, Samantha, and two children as the family requested privacy in the near future.
