- On Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will lift off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, arriving nine months ahead of NASA's previous schedule.
- Named after the 'mother of the Hubble Space Telescope,' Roman combines Hubble's sharp vision with a panoramic field of view 100 times larger, pairing a 2.4-meter primary mirror with unprecedented wide-field imaging capability.
- NASA's flagship mission will map over two billion galaxies and search for around 100,000 new exoplanets while investigating dark energy and dark matter, which constitute 68 per cent and 27 per cent of the universe respectively.
- Jason Rowe, professor at Bishop's University, stated the telescope will "blow the doors open" on microlensing planet discovery, while Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division, said "It's going to do things that currently are impossible."
- Following launch, engineers will spend about 100 days commissioning Roman before routine science operations begin at the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, 1.5 million kilometers away, during its five-year prime mission.
