NASA Shares Stunning Mars Images on Orbiter’s 20th Anniversary
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has returned high-resolution images and radar data revealing possible seasonal water and supporting rover communications for 20 years, NASA said.
- Marking 20 years of operations, NASA celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has spent two decades exploring the Red Planet.
- Launched by NASA in 2005, the MRO arrived at the Red Planet in 2006 to begin its scientific mission, capturing incredible imagery from orbit.
- Using the HiRISE camera, the MRO captures incredible imagery, including a dust devil 800 meters high and a crater about 100 feet in diameter.
- Beyond imagery, the MRO serves as a vital communications bridge, transmitting data back to Earth for ongoing Mars exploration.
- Future operations for the MRO will continue into the late 2020s and beyond, as the veteran spacecraft remains healthy and fueled for exploration.
