SpaceX Launches a Pair of NASA Satellites to Probe the Origins of Space Weather
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – The $170 million TRACERS mission will collect 3,000 measurements over one year to study magnetic reconnection and improve understanding of space weather impacts, NASA said.
- On Wednesday, July 23 at 11:13 a.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched the TRACERS mission from Space Launch Complex 4 East.
- Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County airspace restrictions halted the Tuesday launch attempt, leading launch leaders to scrub and shift liftoff to Wednesday.
- The twin TRACERS satellites were stacked atop each other for launch, deployed more than 90 minutes after liftoff, and will fly about 10 seconds apart to collect 3,000 measurements over one year.
- Ground controllers established communication with the second spacecraft at 3:43 p.m. PDT, about three hours after separation, and the first-stage booster completed its 16th mission and returned with sonic booms.
- Scientists anticipate these measurements will improve space weather predictions and protect critical infrastructure, as NASA said TRACERS will study solar wind interaction with Earth's magnetosphere.

Millennium Space Systems Begins On-Orbit Commissioning of NASA's TRACERS Mission Following Successful Launch
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Millennium Space Systems, a Boeing Company, has begun on-orbit commissioning of NASA's Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS), following the mission's launch on Wednesday, July 23.
NASA has successfully launched the TRACERS mission, two twin spacecraft that will study how Earth's magnetic shield protects our planet from the effects of space weather.
UI scientists cheer as TRACERS lifts off aboard a Falcon 9 rocket - Radio Iowa
Two satellites built by researchers at the University of Iowa were launched into orbit Wednesday in a partnership with NASA and SpaceX. The satellites will help researchers answer questions about how solar wind impacts the Earth’s magnetic field, which can impact everything from phone calls to GPS maps. A crowd at a viewing party hosted […]
NASA launches TRACERS Mission to study how Earth fights space storms
NASA has officially launched the TRACERS mission (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) which will be studying the magnetic reconnection- an energy burst that occurs when the Sun’s magnetic field interacts with Earth’s magnetic shield. This will help in understandin on how space weather affects our planet. The TRACERS satellites lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Cali…
