NASA confirms major discovery made about Uranus - Liverpool Echo
URANUS, JUL 20 – Uranus releases about 15% more energy than it absorbs from the Sun, resolving decades of uncertainty about its heat production and planetary evolution.
- On May 16, NASA researchers confirmed that Uranus generates its own internal heat, overturning beliefs that it lacked any such warmth.
- Nearly 40 years ago, Voyager 2 analysis did not suggest internal heat, but NASA's assessment and recent University of Houston studies reveal Uranus emits more energy than previously believed.
- Researchers found that Uranus emits about 15% more energy than it absorbs from the Sun, and Amy Simon said `Now we have to understand what that remnant amount of heat at Uranus means, as well as get better measurements of it.`
- Future mission planning, Liming Li said the research could improve planning for NASA’s Uranus Orbiter and Probe, and it provides insights into planetary formation, orbital shifts and exoplanet behavior.
- Beyond our solar system, Liming Li noted that the methodology offers testable models for exploring radiant energy on other planets and could inform Earth climate research by revealing planetary heat processes.
