"Narco Sub" Sinks with Drugs on Board After Record Amount of Cocaine Seized From Vessel Off the Azores

Authorities intercepted a semi-submersible carrying nearly nine tonnes of cocaine, the largest shipment ever seized in Portugal by organized crime groups, officials said.

  • On Monday, Portuguese authorities announced a record seizure of approximately nine tonnes of cocaine from a semi-submersible intercepted off the Azores, called `the biggest seizure of cocaine ever in Portugal`.
  • Manned semi-submersibles built in clandestine jungle shipyards have long been used to ferry cocaine north from Colombia, with authorities seizing nearly 6.5 tons off the Azores last March.
  • Officers, aided by the Portuguese navy and air force, seized €300, 10 vehicles, 21 mobile phones, and firearms after the semi-submersible sank with 35 of the 300 packages, authorities said.
  • Authorities say seizures are increasing, noting last year more than 23 tonnes were seized, the highest since 2006, and in October police confiscated six tonnes of hashish in the Seixal region.
  • In recent years these vessels have crossed oceans, and narco subs cannot fully submerge and can sometimes elude detection; a 2023 Colombia narco sub seizure found two dead bodies and nearly 3 tons of cocaine, while a sophisticated, dangerous trafficking network linked to hashish was exposed.
