Naqvi, Iranian counterpart Momeni discuss de-escalation, security issues in Bishkek

The ministers agreed to create a joint working group and expand cooperation against illegal immigration, narcotics trafficking and other security threats, officials said.

  • On Saturday, Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran carrying a message from Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, aiming to revive stalled US-Iran diplomatic negotiations.
  • Before traveling to Tehran, Naqvi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation interior ministers meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where he signed agreements with counterparts including Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev.
  • Delegates at the Bishkek summit agreed to deepen cooperation on combating illegal immigration and narcotics trafficking, further noting that terrorist camps and drug production in Afghanistan "pose serious security concerns for the region."
  • In Lahore, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif provided guidance to Naqvi on Saturday regarding the Tehran mission, stressing institutional coordination as Pakistan continues its mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran.
  • Following months of stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran, observers are closely watching whether Naqvi's current visit can restore momentum to reach a temporary deal and break the diplomatic deadlock.
