Pope Prays for End to 'Fratricidal Hatred'
Leo entrusted his pontificate to the Virgin Mary and urged political leaders to pursue peace and end fratricidal hatred.
On Friday, Pope Leo XIV traveled by helicopter to Pompeii to mark the feast of Our Lady, praying for political leaders to end "fratricidal hatred" near the ruins of the city buried in A.D. 79.
The visit coincided with the anniversary of Leo's election, a date he commemorated last year by leading a prayer for his new pontificate. He also met with sick and disabled people at a charity center affiliated with the sanctuary.
Bartolo Longo founded the Basilica, which Pope Leo XIII declared a pontifical site in 1901 and is venerated for charitable works. Leo made Longo a saint last October after Pope Francis approved the necessary miracle.
Amid recent tensions with President Donald Trump regarding Iran, cheering Italians greeted the Pope with support. When Trump criticized him, Leo "simply answered, I preach the Gospel."
During his homily, Leo entrusted his pontificate to Mary, urging leaders toward enlightenment. He asked the faithful to "pray together for this new mission, for the whole church, for peace in the world, and let us ask Mary, our Mother, for this special grace.
