B.C. Girl, 13, Arrested After Stealing Parents’ Car, Speeding and Crashing Vehicle
Police say the 13-year-old drove 118 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, fled an attempted stop and crashed a parent’s vehicle.
- On July 25, a 13-year-old girl in Nanaimo allegedly took a parent's vehicle without permission, traveling at 118 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Terminal Avenue before crashing.
- After an officer on patrol observed the vehicle speeding and attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated away; police later received a report the vehicle had gone off the roadway.
- Officers located and arrested the youth without incident after finding the damaged vehicle; fortunately, no one was injured and the car was subsequently towed from the scene.
- The youth faces possible charges, said RCMP Operations Officer Donovan Tait, who noted that high speeds combined with an inexperienced driver created an extreme risk to road users.
- Parents and guardians are reminded to secure vehicle keys and speak with youth about serious consequences of taking a vehicle without permission following this incident.
