Naked man arrested for trying to kidnap 7-year-old girl from mother at park
Bystanders and the girl’s parents stopped the suspect before police arrived, and paramedics treated the child for scratches, officials said.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, officers arrested 31-year-old Daniel Vasey at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a 7-year-old girl visiting from Michigan.
Bystanders and the child's parents intervened, "punching, slapping, and pulling on" Vasey until he released the girl; a witness used irritant spray, forcing him into the Willamette River.
Dispatchers received reports of the naked suspect approximately 10 minutes before the abduction attempt, but no Central Precinct officers were available due to other active calls, including a disturbance involving a gun.
North Precinct officers apprehended Vasey and booked him into Multnomah County Detention Center on charges including first- and second-degree attempted kidnapping and third-degree assault, while the victim was treated for scratches.
Visitor Leah Stout criticized the police response, stating, "It's telling families and telling mothers that you can't rely on anything else; you're gonna need to prepare yourself for the absolute worst because nobody's gonna come help you.
