Police trying to identify woman found dead in river on New Year’s Day
An unidentified woman aged 60–70 was found dead in the River Waveney; police say no evidence suggests suspicious circumstances but investigation continues.
- On Thursday, January 1, officers were called just after 8am after a member of the public spotted a woman in the River Waveney at The Quay, Beccles; ambulance crews recovered her and Suffolk Police said the death is being treated as `unexplained`.
- Detectives say they have not identified the woman and are tracing her final movements, appealing to anyone who saw her near The Quay before 8am to come forward.
- The woman is described as white, petite and with short curly brown/copper hair, wearing a cream cardigan, blue top, white jeans and white boots and possibly carrying a pink coat, torch and umbrella.
- The Coroner has been notified as part of the response, detectives launched an investigation and anyone with information should call Suffolk Constabulary's East CID at Lowestoft quoting CAD 135 of 1 January or call 101.
- Regional outlets linked the discovery to nearby searches, including a 13-year-old boy who vanished two weeks ago, and the report appeared on local news pages alongside related stories and notices.
