Myanmar says over 300,000 Rohingya refugees verified for repatriation as exodus enters ninth year
Myanmar says 308,797 verified refugees are former Rakhine residents and will be accepted back when security conditions improve.
- On Saturday, Myanmar's military-backed government announced it verified 308,797 Rohingya as former residents of Rakhine state, stating it will accept their return from Bangladesh camps once security conditions improve.
- Authorities reviewed a list of 828,824 individuals provided by Bangladesh, verifying 426,545 as of the end of July, while the Ministry reported 113,507 unverified and 4,241 individuals involved in what it called terrorist activities.
- The Rakhine-based Arakan Army now controls much of Rakhine after capturing territory from the military, with renewed fighting between the group and the military destabilizing the region.
- Following the 2017 military crackdown, more than 700,000 Rohingya fled into Bangladesh; however, the Ministry rejects claims that more than 1 million people were displaced, citing more than 540,000.
- Since a 2018 agreement, repatriation plans have failed, leaving deteriorating camp conditions to drive increasing numbers of Rohingya to attempt dangerous ocean crossings to Malaysia and Indonesia.
