Myanmar Leader to Visit Malaysia After Migrant Returns Begin
Anwar Ibrahim said 10,493 Myanmar nationals have already been returned this year as Malaysia seeks a long-term repatriation deal.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing will visit Malaysia in the "next few days" to discuss refugee solutions and repatriations.
Malaysia plans to return about 5,000 Myanmar nationals while hosting more than 215,000 refugees, including more than 126,000 Rohingya, amid reports of "growing hostility, discriminatory rhetoric and online attacks" against them.
A group of nearly 1,500 returnees arrived in Myanmar on Sunday, contributing to nearly 10,000 repatriations this year, while UN rights chief Volker Turk warned against returning people to a country with "egregious human rights violations and abuses."
Anwar emphasized that while he welcomes returns, "We can accept Myanmar, but they must accept back," demanding they "guarantee proper treatment to their own people" to prevent abuse.
This visit serves as a diplomatic push for legitimacy by Min Aung Hlaing following his 2021 coup, a move complicated by ASEAN's exclusion of Myanmar from high-level meetings and a civil war that has killed more than 100,000 people.
