Myanmar Lawmakers Put Junta Chief on Path to Presidency
Min Aung Hlaing won 247 of 260 votes in the lower house as part of a military plan to secure his presidency after the 2021 coup.
- On Tuesday, Myanmar's lower house elected Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as a vice-president, parliament officials said. "The lower house of elected MPs announces Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as a vice-president," speaker Khin Yi said.
- Hlaing handed military command to loyalist Ye Win Oo on Monday to facilitate his transition to civilian leadership. The Union Solidarity and Development Party now holds 80 percent of elected seats, ensuring alignment with the top brass.
- The junta chief received 247 of 260 votes, a parliament official said according to live broadcast. The upper house separately elected Nan Ni Ni Aye, a regional MP from Karen state affiliated with the USDP, as another vice-president.
- Parliament will select three vice-presidents, one of whom will become president later this week. The military will appoint the third vice-president, completing the process as Hlaing prepares to exchange his uniform for civilian clothes.
- This transition follows five years of hardline rule and heavily restricted elections in January. The military has long presented itself as Myanmar's sole guardian, despite ousting the government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.
