Shikichi Miyagi (84), a resident of Naha City, who attended the memorial service, lost his older sister Tsuruko (aged 11) and older brother Shijun (aged 9) on board the Tsushima Maru. His father, Shiko, who was drafted into the navy at the age of 39 in 1944, told Shijun, "You are the eldest son, so protect the family," when he left for the front.
