SpaceX Claims It Will Put a Vera Rubin NVL72 Rack-Scale System Into Orbit Next Year

Nvidia says each rack weighs about 4,000 pounds and SpaceX has not said which rocket will carry the system.

  • SpaceX and Nvidia announced a partnership to launch a space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 system to orbit in Q4 next year, targeting significant scale by 2028.
  • On Monday, Elon Musk announced the plan via the social network X, explaining that satellites will feed Grok models with up-to-date contextual data while accelerating agentic AI processing.
  • Each Vera Rubin NVL72 system comprises 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs housed in 18 compute trays, weighing roughly 4,000 lbs or 1,800kg.
  • Although SpaceX has not specified which rockets will carry the equipment, the Falcon 9 has a 22,800 kg capacity, though engineers must address radiation-hardening challenges.
