Musical instrument lending program comes to Cowichan
The program has placed 60 instruments so far and is seeking more trumpets and alto saxophones for students, the society said.
The Oceanside Classical Concerts Society is expanding its Musical Instrument Lending Program to reach students in Ladysmith, Chemainus, and Duncan, now serving both elementary and secondary students across Cowichan Valley School District 79.
Since launching three years ago, OCCS has collected more than 200 donated instruments from mid-Island community members, with local specialists reconditioning them at the Society's expense.
Having placed 60 instruments with mid-Island students, OCCS now prioritizes donations of trumpets and alto saxophones, with district music teachers identifying eligible recipients who receive loans at no cost.
The Society encourages community members to donate unused instruments, offering tax receipts for items valued over $20; pickups can be arranged at 250-738-7138 or strakaen@shaw.ca.
With three years of infrastructure secured, OCCS positions itself to serve both elementary and secondary students across the broader Cowichan Valley region, building on success stories like former scholarship winner Caiden Meyer.
