Boycotters Spain, Ireland, Slovenia Will Not Show Eurovision
The broadcasters will air alternative programming as organizers face criticism over Israel’s participation and a contest field of 35 countries, the fewest since 2004.
Five countries—Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain—are boycotting the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest this week, with public service broadcasters refusing to air the event over Israel's war in Gaza.
Amnesty International criticized the European Broadcasting Union for failing to suspend Israel, calling the decision "an act of cowardice and an illustration of blatant double standards" after a UN-backed probe determined "genocide is occurring in Gaza."
Slovenian broadcaster RTV announced: "For the next 10 days, instead of the Eurovision circus, the national television programme will be coloured by the thematic programme series Voices of Palestine." Spain's RTVE will run The House of Music instead.
At the weekend, Eurovision organizers issued a formal warning to Israeli broadcaster KAN after promotional videos encouraged viewers to "vote 10 times," which Eurovision Song Contest director Martin Green said violated competition rules and spirit.
The competition proceeds in Vienna on Tuesday, bringing 35 countries; Ireland will air alternative programming including Home, Year Scotland, and Father Ted instead of the live music event.
Public broadcasters in Spain, Ireland and Slovenia announced on Monday that they would boycott and not broadcast the 70th Eurovision Song Contest, being held in Austria this week, due to Israel's participation.
The Slovenian group RTV announced that it would instead broadcast a programme dedicated to the Palestinians, the Spanish RTVE will programme a music event not linked to Eurovision and the Irish public channel an episode of a television series.
