Murder trial in 2024 killing of Tatjana Stefanski in rural B.C. is set to begin

The five-week jury trial was moved from Vernon after a judge ruled Stefanski could not reasonably participate there, prosecutors said.

  • On Monday, the second-degree murder trial of Vitali Stefanski began in Kamloops, where he is accused of killing his ex-wife, Tatjana Stefanski, and the Prosecution Service expects the jury proceedings to last about five weeks.
  • Tatjana Stefanski, 44, was last seen on April 13, 2024, at a property in Lumby, about 25 kilometres east of Vernon in the Interior, and Mounties said she was reported abducted before her body was found nearby on April 14, 2024.
  • The defendant, who shared two children with Tatjana Stefanski, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on May 31, 2024, and Police said another man "was arrested in the general vicinity," then released on conditions earlier in the investigation.
  • Tatjana's partner, Jason Gaudreault, said on social media Monday, "Today is the day we start to have closure," as The Kamloops Court Registry reported jury selection would run Monday and possibly Tuesday after the trial was moved from Vernon to Kamloops last year.
  • The jury trial is expected to span about five weeks, according to the Prosecution Service, and Vitali's murder charge remains unproven, while Archway Society for Domestic Peace offers support at 250-542-1122, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
