Munster CEO Ian Flanagan Announces Departure From Role
An interim chief executive will be named in the coming weeks as the province begins a search for a permanent successor, Munster Rugby said.
On Oct 1, Munster Rugby CEO Ian Flanagan announced he will step down at the end of the month. Flanagan has led the province since 2019, succeeding the late Garrett Fitzgerald.
Flanagan's resignation follows a turbulent period marked by staff redundancies and an independent governance review commissioned after the Roger Randle saga. The province faced mounting pressure from former players regarding organizational management.
Former captain Peter Mahony criticized the province's hierarchy on the Indo Sport podcast this week, saying Munster needs "a good look at the governance of the building" and that it "kills a lot of the guys who have played rugby."
Munster Rugby and the IRFU will announce an Interim CEO in the coming weeks, with a recruitment process for a permanent successor to be undertaken in due course. The transition marks the end of Flanagan's seven-year tenure.
During his tenure, Flanagan oversaw development of the €7.3 million Munster Rugby Cork Centre and led Munster to the 2023 URC title, representing significant long-term investments in player development across the province.
