Muni Long Details Double Lung Transplant After Being Told She Had a Week to Live
The singer said doctors told her she had days to live without the procedure and that she is recovering after vocal surgery.
On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Grammy-winning singer Muni Long revealed on Good Morning America that she underwent a double lung transplant after developing pneumonia.
Pneumonia developed while Long was opening for Brandy and Monica, leaving her with one week to live without immediate surgery; doctors offered transplant or hospice care.
Facing the prognosis, the mother of 3-year-old Tatum prioritized her life over career vanity. "The ego and the vanity was just like, But what about my voice?" Long reflected, yet chose the procedure.
Six months post-surgery, Long reports feeling "fabulous" and symptom-free. She released her first solo single of the year, "Richest," on Monday, June 22, noting the track was recorded before the procedure altered her voice.
Doctors have advised Long to rest for up to a year before returning to the stage. While live performances remain on hold, she intends to release new music to support fans during her recovery.
