CNG Gets Costlier by ₹2 in Mumbai in Second Hike in 15 Days; Revision Sparks Fresh Fare Hike Demand

MGL said the revised rates reflect higher gas procurement costs and will affect more than 31 lakh households and thousands of CNG vehicle owners.

  • State-Run Mahanagar Gas Limited on Saturday hiked Compressed Natural Gas prices by Rs 2 to Rs 86 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region , with Piped Natural Gas rising 50 paise per Standard Cubic Meter .
  • Marking the second increase this month, MGL officials attributed rising procurement costs to geopolitical uncertainties, crude oil price increases, and rupee weakness; the company had previously raised CNG rates on May 13.
  • Nearly 12 lakh CNG-run vehicles, including approximately 2.8 lakh auto-rickshaws and over 1.6 lakh taxis, now face higher operating costs, prompting transport operators to fear fare pressure in coming weeks.
  • Over 31 lakh households relying on Domestic PNG for cooking will pay more, as the revised rate reaches 52 per SCM across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and neighboring areas.
  • Despite the hike, MGL maintains that CNG remains around 45 per cent cheaper than petrol and 12 per cent cheaper than diesel, while supplying gas across Kalyan, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Osmanabad, Chitradurga, and Davanagere.
