GUATEMALA, JUL 11 – More than 150 earthquakes and aftershocks with magnitudes up to 5.7 caused landslides, structural damage, and evacuations in southern Guatemala, officials reported.
- On Tuesday afternoon, Guatemala experienced dozens of earthquakes and aftershocks measuring between 3.0 and 5.7 in magnitude, primarily affecting the departments of Sacatepéquez, Escuintla, and Guatemala.
- The main series began with a 4.8 magnitude quake southwest of Guatemala City, followed about 30 minutes later by a stronger 5.7 magnitude earthquake near San Vicente Pacaya in Escuintla.
- The tremors caused evacuations, landslides burying at least five people, structural damage, minor property damage, and two men died when rocks fell onto their pickup truck in Escuintla.
- The official in charge of disaster management issued an orange-level warning, the second most severe alert, while President Bernardo Arévalo announced the suspension of classes and work to evaluate the impact.
