Mississippi Death Toll Rises to 14 From Winter Storm

Recovery efforts continue with 79 warming centers open and 650 National Guard soldiers mobilized amid widespread damage to homes, roads, and power infrastructure, officials said.

  • Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves confirmed four more storm-related deaths on Jan. 29, raising the statewide total to 14 amid Winter Storm Fern recovery.
  • Winter Storm Fern hit last weekend across the Mid-South, causing heavy ice that left many roads impassable and black ice formed after temperatures dipped below freezing Wednesday night.
  • Reeves reported 223 homes, 10 businesses and seven farms damaged or affected, while 12 public roads were destroyed, 20 had major damage, 50 minor damage, and two bridges sustained minor damage.
  • The Mississippi National Guard mobilized 150 additional soldiers, bringing total deployed guardsmen to 650, while MDOT and DPS are opening portions of I-55 north and state and federal teams installed 45 generators with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and MEMA.
  • Power companies reduced outages to about 98,850 statewide from nearly 180,000 earlier this week as 79 warming centers operate in 44 counties with five shelters open, while the National Weather Service forecasts 11 degrees Saturday night.
