Palisades Gets Key Licensing Approval From Federal Regulators
VAN BUREN COUNTY, MICHIGAN, JUL 24 – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved transfer of operating authority and reinstatement of key licenses after finding no significant environmental impacts, enabling Palisades to restart.
- With Thursday’s approval, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission authorized Holtec to transition the Palisades plant in Covert Township back to an operating license.
- Following technical reviews, the NRC approved a series of licensing and regulatory actions that support transfer of operating authority from Holtec Decommissioning International LLC to Palisades Energy LLC.
- According to officials, Palisades will generate over 800 megawatts of carbon-free power enough for more than 800,000 homes.
- This approval makes Palisades the first U.S. nuclear plant to transition from decommissioning back to an operating license, and Holtec International President Kelly Trice said it `represents an unprecedented milestone in U.S. nuclear energy`.
- Remaining licensing actions must be completed before the original operating license expires March 24, 2031, NRC said, before the plant can fully restart.
