MPs urge action to undercut 'manosphere' by tackling anti-women ideology
The committee wants funding for healthy masculinities, youth programs and safer online platforms as it warns antifeminist ideology is fueling gender-based violence.
On Tuesday, The House women's committee tabled a report warning that "antifeminist ideologies are becoming increasingly prominent in Canada and internationally," with MPs calling for government funding to challenge the "manosphere."
The MPs launched their study following the 2018 Toronto van attack, where a man inspired by "incels" killed ten people, as Statistics Canada tracked a 19 per cent increase in police-reported intimate partner violence from 2014 to 2022.
Ottawa is urged to boost funding for programs "promoting healthy masculinities and men's mental health, combating antifeminism, and providing early intervention" for those at risk, while also demanding legislation to criminalize nonconsensual AI-generated images.
The Bloc, while agreeing with the report's general themes, released a separate statement arguing that many proposed measures infringe on Quebec's jurisdiction and should respect provincial authority.
MPs noted the chatbot Grok created millions of non-consensual sexualized images in January, and The Conservatives advocate for "a substantial and permanent increase in federal health transfers" to address radicalization through mental health support.
