British lawmaker sues Musk's xAI over sexualised Grok images
The plaintiffs say public names would increase harassment risk after Grok was used to create millions of sexualized images, including some involving apparent children.
- Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm, xAI, is requesting the public identification of four people who allegedly had deepfake sexualized images created using Grok, according to court documents filed in the Northern District of California.
- In January, the Musk-owned Grok chatbot caused global outrage after the system was used to create around 3 million sexualized images over 11 days, with 23,000 potentially involving children.
- Sophia Rios, a lawyer for the plaintiffs at Berger Montague, wrote that xAI seeks to "strip Plaintiffs of their pseudonyms in an obvious effort to intimidate Plaintiffs into dropping the litigation."
- Labour MP Jess Asato filed a claim at the High Court in England alleging Grok generated fabricated images of her, seeking remedies including damages and formal acknowledgment of illegality.
- Facing a wave of lawsuits and regulatory probes, SpaceX, which now owns xAI, has set aside more than $500 million to deal with the fallout from the system's widespread misuse.
