Movement restriction in Abuja as FCT elections hold Saturday
Movement restrictions and bans on weapons and party insignia aim to prevent voter intimidation and maintain neutrality during elections, authorities said.
- On Friday, Nyesom Wike, Federal Capital Territory Minister, ordered a movement restriction in Abuja from 8:00 p.m. Friday to 6:00 p.m. Saturday ahead of the elections.
- Police said the order followed a security review meeting convened by the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security and formed part of measures to secure the polls.
- Only essential-duty vehicles and accredited electoral personnel are exempted from the ban, including ambulances, fire service trucks, and those of accredited observers; police said only constitutionally recognized security agencies will be deployed.
- Only eligible voters and officially accredited party agents identified by INEC will be allowed at polling units, with security personnel directed to enforce rules strictly but professionally, authorities urged cooperation for a peaceful process.
- In Kano, the State Police Command imposed an 18-hour movement restriction ahead of local by-elections, banning weapons, party insignia, and state-backed security outfits after two lawmakers died in December 2025.
