Mounties Searching for Missing Snowmobiler in Northern B.C.
RCMP said the man was found about 4 kilometres from his last known location after weather improved and a helicopter joined the search.
- On Sunday, May 10, searchers located a missing snowmobiler deceased in the Haines Pass area, approximately 4 km from his last known location after a weather break allowed helicopter and snowmobile teams access.
- Three snowmobilers entered Haines Pass on Friday to retrieve a broken-down machine, but one became separated from the group and lacked survival gear or satellite communication.
- Treacherous winter conditions—snow, fog, rain, and wind—created zero visibility, hampering rescue efforts until Sunday. Corporal Brett Urano noted the terrain was "very technical with extreme avalanche conditions, open crevices and melting snow."
- Leadership from the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun offered support to the Yukon RCMP, while officials warned civilians against independent searches, stating "This is extremely dangerous" and could divert resources to rescue additional people.
- The BC Coroners Service has assumed responsibility for the investigation following recovery of the body, which was found approximately 4 km from the missing man's last known location in the Yukon border region.
