Mountaineer Nirmal Purja killed in Pakistan avalanche, his company says
Elite Exped said the 10-member team was swept away at about 7,000 metres, and six bodies have been located.
- On Saturday, adventure company Elite Exped confirmed legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja was killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak, the world's 12th-highest mountain, during an expedition on Thursday.
- The avalanche struck along Broad Peak's standard West Ridge route at approximately 21,600 to 21,850 feet, leaving Purja and five other climbers missing since Friday before confirmation of their deaths.
- Elite Exped identified the lost climbing partners as Pur Bahadur Gurung, known as Yukta, and Nima Sherpa, with the company confirming other expedition members also did not survive.
- Purja, a former British military specialist who served 16 years, climbed all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in 189 days, an achievement featured in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
- Tributes continue pouring in for the mountaineer who inspired millions through his courage and humility; Purja previously assisted Spencer Matthews in the documentary Finding Michael, recovering the body of Matthews' brother from Everest.
