Sooke Hills Fire Grows to 50 Hectares, Smoke Visible Across the South Island

BC Wildfire Service said crews are using aircraft and heavy equipment as the out-of-control blaze continues to grow.

  • The Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke grew to more than 50 hectares by late Monday, Sept. 21, burning about four kilometres west of Sooke River, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
  • Discovered Sept. 20, the fire has grown northeast up the rocky slope of Mount Jack, with the Wildfire Service expecting further growth as crews work toward containment.
  • Multiple crews are responding with aviation resources and heavy equipment, while smoke remains visible across Greater Victoria, Shawnigan Lake, and the South Island as suppression efforts continue.
  • This incident remains the largest of several wildfires burning on Vancouver Island, including a 12-hectare fire near the 16-kilometre mark of Nitnat Main, northwest of Lake Cowichan.
  • Seasonal temperatures do not mean wildfire risk has disappeared, the BC Wildfire Service reminded residents, who can report fires through the service app, at 1-800-663-5555, or by dialing *5555.
