Motorcycle taxi drivers in Congo rally for Ebola awareness as attacks hinder response
Dozens of drivers joined an awareness caravan as officials said community skepticism has fueled more than 520 attacks on health workers.
On Wednesday, dozens of motorcycle taxi drivers rode through Bunia and Rwampara in Congo's Ituri province, wearing white "Stop Ebola" T-shirts as part of an awareness caravan organized with the World Health Organization .
The initiative aims to contain an Ebola outbreak that has claimed 115 lives and infected nearly 600 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to Congolese authorities reporting late Tuesday.
Health officials struggle with community skepticism, reporting more than 520 incidents impacting operations as residents sometimes deny the disease exists or attack health facilities demanding the bodies of deceased relatives.
Motorcyclist Josue Mbabona, who lost three relatives to the virus, urged skeptical residents to accept reality: "Those who don't believe it should know that it's real."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged European countries on Tuesday to tighten travel restrictions on arrivals from Africa, while three vaccine candidates remain in development against the Bundibugyo virus.
