MotoGP Sprints to Have Their Own Qualifying Sessions
The revised weekend format adds a separate sprint grid and cuts practice time, with all riders entering Q1 before 12 advance to Q2.
- On Wednesday, MotoGP announced a revised 2027 weekend format introducing a dedicated Qualifying session for Sprint races, creating a separate grid for the shorter, high-intensity events.
- Since Sprint races were introduced in 2023, both the Sprint and Grand Prix grids have relied on a single Saturday Qualifying session, a system now being replaced.
- To accommodate the new 15-minute Sprint Qualifying, MotoGP will shorten Friday FP2 to 30 minutes and eliminate the ten-minute Sunday Warm-up session entirely.
- All riders will participate in Q1-Q2, with the twelve fastest progressing to the pole position shootout, while the pitlane opens for 10 minutes for sighting laps.
- "The new format balances an incredible spectacle for fans and new stakes in each session," MotoGP said in a statement regarding the changes arriving next year.
