MotoGP to Introduce Sprint Qualifying Amid 2027 Format Changes
The change gives sprint races their own grid and adds a second qualifying session while MotoGP shortens practice and drops the Sunday warm-up.
- On Wednesday, MotoGP announced a new 2027 weekend format introducing a dedicated 15-minute sprint Qualifying session every Friday, creating a separate grid for the shorter high-intensity races.
- Previously, Sprint races used the same grid positions as the Grand Prix. MotoGP stated the new format balances an "incredible spectacle for fans and new stakes in each session."
- The Friday schedule will gain a 45-minute practice session followed by a 30-minute free practice and 15-minute sprint qualifying. MotoGP confirmed Sunday's 10-minute warm-up will be dropped completely.
- Saturday morning Qualifying for the Grand Prix maintains the knockout Q1-Q2 format, with all riders participating in Q1. The leading 12 riders then progress to Q2 following a 20-minute FP3 session.
- Teams approved the reforms at the Red Bull Ring, building on the 2023 introduction of Sprint races to further differentiate them from the Grand Prix. The changes take effect next year.
