MotoGP gives first look at controversial Adelaide track
The 4.13-km street circuit will replace hundreds of trees and add a temporary pit building as officials target a 2027 MotoGP debut.
- On Sunday, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas unveiled the design for a 4.13km street circuit in Adelaide, set to host MotoGP starting November 2027 and replacing the Phillip Island circuit.
- Sharp local opposition emerged in recent weeks as 43,000 people signed a petition protesting the expected removal of nearly 400 trees in Adelaide's parklands to make space for the circuit.
- Addressing environmental concerns, Malinauskas pledged to replace removed trees on a 10 to 1 basis, resulting in 3,770 new plantings, while the 4.13km track features 15 corners with speeds reaching 343kph.
- The $96 million project aims to project South Australia to a global audience of more than 630 million people, with MotoGP Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta stating the design prioritizes safety for riders.
- Beyond MotoGP, the Tour Down Under will utilize the new street circuit starting January 2028, as the government procures a temporary pit building to support event infrastructure.

It will be the first time that the championship has reached the center of a city. "The riders have already seen the route and are delighted," says Carlos Ezpeleta.
Formula 1 has incorporated, in recent years, a lot of urban circuits. Following the example of the iconic Monaco Grand Prix in Monte-Carlo, the F1 has introduced urban circuits in Singapore, Baku (Azerbaijan), Yeda (Saudi Arabia), Las Vegas, Miami and, soon, also in Madrid. MotoGP does not have that tradition, but the competition, which is also owned by Liberty Media, will premiere next year the first "urban circuit" in Australia.
MotoGP promoter Dorna/Liberty presented the first computer animations of the new route in Adelaide as part of the Aragon weekend, on which the Australia-GP will take place from 2027.
