Mosquito in Norfolk tests positive for West Nile Virus
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, JUL 22 – Norfolk health officials began mosquito control efforts after detecting West Nile virus in a mosquito sample, with 1 in 150 infected individuals developing severe illness, the health department said.
- A sample collected on Friday, July 18, 2025, tested positive in Norfolk's 1100 block of North Military Highway, marking the first virus activity of the season, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
- Amid rising summer mosquito activity, health officials note that West Nile Virus spreads when mosquitoes feed on infected birds, as mosquito season runs from summer into fall and surveillance will be increased.
- Most infected individuals show no symptoms but illness can include mild and severe neurological signs, with approximately 1 in 150 cases becoming serious, health department said.
- Following the positive test, health officials said crews are treating standing water to control mosquitoes, while residents are advised to use insect repellent and ensure doors and windows are well-screened.
- Residents are advised to drain standing water weekly, avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk and wear long, light, loose clothing to reduce mosquito bites.
