UAE Energy Security Lies in Diversification
- Morocco and the UAE agreed on May 2025 to invest $14 billion in energy and water infrastructure projects across Morocco.
- This agreement followed King Mohammed VI’s 2023 UAE visit, which aimed to deepen cooperation and led to three signed deals with Emirati and Moroccan entities.
- The projects include a 1,400-kilometre, 3,000 MW high-voltage line transmitting green electricity from Western Sahara, seawater desalination plants, and combined-cycle gas and renewable power plants.
- The consortium expects to generate over 25,000 jobs, foster technology transfer, and support local industrial ecosystems for desalination and renewables by 2030.
- These initiatives aim to enhance Morocco’s water security and energy independence while accelerating renewable energy integration to meet 52% of electricity needs by 2030.
