Morocco Star Achraf Hakimi Will Stand Trial in a Rape Case, French Appeals Court Confirms
The court said there is sufficient evidence for trial after Hakimi appealed the referral, and no trial date has been set.
On Friday, The Versailles appeals court confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial in a rape case, following accusations from a 24-year-old woman.
Preliminary charges were filed against Hakimi in March 2023 after the woman reported an incident at his Paris home; the court's decision came hours before Morocco's World Cup Group C match against Scotland in Foxborough, Mass.
Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the plaintiff, said the decision "brings my client a sense of relief and hope," while Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin told The Associated Press that exculpatory evidence should have led to dismissal.
Writing on X on Friday, Hakimi claimed he feels like "an easy target" due to his fame, adding, "I have been waiting for this trial since the first day. And I am now waiting for it impatiently."
The defender remains focused on the World Cup after winning the Champions League for a second consecutive year with PSG, though no trial date has been announced following prosecutor recommendations.
