Moroccan court sentences 19 soccer fans to prison over hooliganism at chaotic Africa Cup final
- On Thursday, a Moroccan court sentenced 19 soccer fans to up to a year in prison for hooliganism linked to a chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final.
- Last month, defendants were arrested when outraged supporters tried to storm the pitch to protest a late penalty in the final, and the public prosecutor sought maximum penalties.
- The court found 18 Senegalese and a French national guilty of multiple charges, sentencing eleven to one year with a $550 fine, four to six months with a $218 fine, and four to three months with a $130 fine.
- Attorneys said they plan to appeal the sentences and described them as too severe, while officials reported stadium damage estimated at more than $476,719.
- The hearing drew Senegalese and French diplomats while family members of defendants insisted on their innocence; security footage showed a Senegal supporter taken from the stadium and many defendants held over a month.
