More woe for racquet-smashing Demon in Rome exit
De Minaur made 37 unforced errors and lost his third straight match as Matteo Arnaldi rallied in nearly three hours.
On Friday at the Foro Italico in Rome, Australian Alex de Minaur lost to home favourite Matteo Arnaldi 4-6 7-6 6-4 at the Italian Open.
De Minaur's recent form has deteriorated markedly, with the Australian suffering three consecutive losses and enduring first-match exits in back-to-back tournaments for the first time in three years.
During the match, de Minaur committed 37 unforced errors and demonstrated mounting frustration, smashing his racquet into the clay after netting a game-losing forehand.
De Minaur has now lost four of his past five matches on clay, a troubling record as he prepares for the French Open later this month.
Alexei Popyrin remains the last Australian in Rome's singles draw after Sydneysider Aleksandar Vukic lost to American Tommy Paul, while Novak Djokovic fell to Dino Prizmic.
