UPDATE: Streets Reopen at Oregon State Capitol After 'Good Trouble' Protest
CHITTENDEN COUNTY, VERMONT, JUL 17 – Organizers held over 1,600 peaceful protests nationwide to honor John Lewis's legacy of non-violent activism, marking five years since his death, organizers said.
- On July 17, the Good Trouble Lives On organization planned more than 1,600 demonstrations nationwide, marking the fifth anniversary of John Lewis's death.
- The movement is called "Make Good Trouble" to honor John Lewis, who coined the term and said `Get in good trouble, necessary trouble and redeem the soul of America`.
- Organizers scheduled demonstrations in Plattsburgh, Burlington, Montpelier, Winooski, Middlebury, Manchester, Brandon, Newport and North Hero, and set events in Conway, Concord, Plymouth and Franconia, urging lawful conduct.
- According to the Good Trouble Lives On website, activists decried what they called a 'most brazen rollback of civil rights in a generation,' and Cynthia Breunlin said, 'Get recognition for how much the people object to the policies. We are outraged.'
- According to the movement's news release, organizers demand an end to the administration's civil rights crackdown, more than 1,500 communities participated including Chicago, and the grassroots movement emphasizes nonviolent action.
