Population of Switzerland rises to record 9.05 million amid fall in immigration

Switzerland's population continues to rise to a record level, despite a drop in immigration and a falling birthrate, new statistics reveal.

The country is especially popular with Europeans – the Italians and Germans prefer to come.

Switzerland's permanent resident population reached a new high of 9,048,900 at the end of 2024.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the population rose less strongly than in 2023.

Nine million people are now permanent residents in Switzerland, despite historically low fertility, says the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. Main factor: life expectancy continues to rise, while immigration has declined sharply after a record year in 2023.

At the end of 2024, Switzerland's resident population reached a new peak with 9'048,900 people. Immigration declined compared with the previous year in 2023.
