€90m in Counterfeit Food, Drink Seized in EU Last Year
- Europol and Interpol helped seize fake food and beverage items valued at approximately 91 million euros across the European Union last year.
- The seizures responded to health and economic risks caused by fake goods mainly originating from China and Turkey, with authorities warning of these dangers.
- Authorities confiscated 22,000 tonnes of food and about 850,000 litres of mostly alcoholic drinks, dismantling 11 criminal networks and reporting 278 suspects to judicial authorities.
- The EU Intellectual Property Office highlighted the serious health risks posed by fake food and beverages and reported that the wine and spirits sector experiences annual sales losses amounting to 2.28 billion euros due to counterfeiting.
