More than 30 cats rescued from abandoned boat near Washington beach
Police said more than 30 cats and kittens were found in unsafe conditions on the boat, with many frightened and malnourished.
On Thursday, August 6, 2026, Tacoma Police and Marine Services Unit officers discovered over 40 cats living in "unsafe conditions" on an abandoned boat anchored off Owen Beach, launching a multi-day rescue operation.
Cheri Page of Tacoma Animal Control explained the cats likely lived on the vessel for months, multiplying after the owner failed to spay or neuter the initial animals, causing the overpopulation.
By Friday, officers coordinated with the Forensics Unit to safely remove the animals, transporting 31 cats to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, while approximately 10 to 14 remained on board.
Officials identified the boat's owner through registration information but have not established communication; no charges or fees are being discussed as the investigation remains ongoing.
Animal Control emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent overpopulation, while urging the community to reach out for help during overwhelming situations with animals.
