English Channel migrant small boat crossings reach 200,000 since 2018
Official figures show the total has doubled in three years as governments struggle to curb smuggling gangs and asylum claims.
On Friday, 70 migrants crossed the English Channel aboard a single boat, bringing total small-boat arrivals to 200,013 since 2018; the Home Office confirmed the milestone on Saturday.
Successive governments have pledged to "stop the boats," yet arrivals have more than doubled over the last three years, with migrants primarily from Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, and Albania.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a £662 million three-year deal with Paris last month to boost beach patrols, while nearly 95% of arrivals claimed asylum in the UK.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described the immigration system as "totally broken," while fewer than 8,000 arrivals have been returned from the UK since 2018.
Smugglers have begun utilizing Belgium for crossings, increasingly relying on overcrowded vessels as authorities recorded at least eight deaths attempting the crossing this year.
