More heat and smoke in the forecast for B.C. as temperature records tumble
Sixteen temperature records, some nearly 100 years old, were broken, increasing wildfire risk and prompting air quality warnings across British Columbia, officials said.
- On Monday, Vernon, British Columbia reached 34.7 C, breaking its 2009 record of 34 C, while Burns Lake topped 30.3 C, exceeding the 2024 mark of 27.5 C.
- A ridge of high pressure prompted additional heat warnings and Environment Canada issued alerts for Boundary region, North Coast, Fraser Canyon, and North and South Thompson through Thursday, with overnight lows near about 18 C.
- In key Interior communities, Sparwood reached 33.2 C, breaking its 2022 record of 31.4 C, and Merritt hit 35.9 C, surpassing its 2024 mark of 35.2 C on Monday.
- The BC Wildfire Service reported the heat increased wildfire risk, raising blazes to more than 160 and prompting air-quality warnings in central and northeastern B.C., with smoke lingering until Thursday.
- Historic records tumbled as Clearwater, British Columbia shattered a 97-year-old daily high and Quesnel, British Columbia hit 33.6 C, breaking an 87-year-old record set in 1938.
