More than 50 Sick, 7 Hospitalized for Salmonella Infections Linked to Recalled Salami
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recalled three types of salami on Tuesday from stores in Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba due to potential salmonella contamination.
- The recall was initiated after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency identified a connection between certain Rea's and Bona's Genoa Salami products and reported cases of foodborne illness.
- The recalled salami was sold in multiple provinces and can cause symptoms including fever, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially affecting young children, pregnant people, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
- Health officials confirmed 57 cases of salmonella between mid-April and late May, with 44 occurring in Alberta and 13 in Ontario, and identified the strain as resistant to multiple antibiotics; according to the agency, most individuals infected recover completely in about four to seven days.
- The CFIA urges consumers not to eat or distribute the products, to return or discard them, and recommends contacting health providers if symptoms occur, while working to remove all recalled items from the market.
