More amber heat health alerts issued - as World Cup and heatwaves drive record NHS demand
Summer heatwaves and World Cup demand pushed corridor care to 3,181 patients a day, while 7.28 million treatments were waiting, NHS England said.
In June, an average of 3,181 patients received care in hospital corridors daily across England, rising from 2,900 in May, according to NHS England data.
Heatwaves and the World Cup are driving summer demand, forcing the NHS to manage pressures typically reserved for winter months, Professor Frankie Swords said.
While 65.6% of patients began routine treatment within 18 weeks, the national waiting list rose for the second consecutive month to 7.28 million treatments.
Health Secretary James Murray called corridor care 'unacceptable and undignified,' pledging the Government will eliminate it by the end of the current parliament.
Bea Taylor of the Nuffield Trust warned that climate change means hospitals now face multiple shocks throughout summer, putting additional strain on the health service.
